Every automatic transfer switch panel is built around the generator it serves. The changeover is rated in amperes against the connected load and duty — typically 63 A to 1250 A on 415 V ± 10%, 3-phase, 4-wire supplies at 50 Hz — with mechanical and electrical interlocking rated for the full changeover current. Changeover switches are Socomec, ASCO, L&T or Elmeasure, selected to suit your standard. A microprocessor AMF controller handles mains sensing and the timer set: mains-failure delay, crank and rest periods, stabilising delay before transfer, return delay on mains restoration, and engine cool-down before shutdown. Control supply is 12 V DC or 24 V DC from the generator battery with an SMPS float charger, and 230 V AC for panel auxiliaries. Both sources are protected by MCCB, sized to the changeover rating.

What is an Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) Panel?
An Automatic Mains Failure panel checks the incoming utility supply continuously against set limits for voltage, frequency and phase presence. If the supply fails or drifts outside those limits, the panel issues the start command to the standby generator on its own, with nobody required on site.

An automatic transfer switch panel holds the switching gear that moves the load between two supplies — motorised changeover switches or contactor pairs, mechanical interlocks and control relays.
The interlock is the point of it. By making it physically impossible for both paths to close at once, the ATS stops the generator back-feeding into the grid, which protects linesmen working on the network and protects the generator itself.

What is an AMF panel?
An AMF (Automatic Mains Failure) panel is a control cabinet that detects mains outages, phase loss or voltage outside limits, and automatically starts your standby generator. It is also called an AMF control panel, a generator control panel or a DG set AMF panel.
What is an ATS panel?
An ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) panel holds the switching gear — motorised changeover switches or contactors — that transfers the connected load from the grid to the generator once it is running and stable. It is also known as an automatic changeover switch panel.
What is the difference between AMF and ATS?
The AMF controller is the brain: it monitors the mains and starts the generator. The ATS is the muscle: it physically switches the load between sources, with interlocks preventing both from connecting at once. Most panels we build do both jobs in one enclosure.
What is an automatic changeover switch?
It is the switching element inside an ATS panel — a motorised or contactor-based device that moves the load from one supply to the other. Manual changeover switches do the same job but need someone to operate them, which defeats the purpose during a night outage. We build with Socomec, ASCO, L&T and Elmeasure switches.
How does an AMF panel start a generator automatically?
The controller is wired into the generator's starter and control circuit. When utility voltage drops below the set threshold, it energises the start relay, much like turning the ignition key, and monitors the engine through the starting attempt.
How does an ATS transfer the load?
Once the generator holds stable voltage and frequency, the changeover mechanism disconnects the load from the grid and connects it to the generator. The mechanical interlock makes it impossible for both paths to close at the same time.

No. There is a short break while the generator starts, stabilises and the changeover operates — usually several seconds. For equipment that cannot tolerate any break, a UPS is needed alongside the AMF panel, not instead of it.
