RLC LOAD BANKS

RLC Load Banks

Resistive, Inductive and Capacitive Load Banks for Full kVA and Power Factor Testing

Also known as: Resistive Inductive Capacitive Load Bank · Reactive Load Bank · R-L-C Load Bank · Linear Load Bank · Combined Load Bank · Inductive Load Bank

Akshayam Controls & Automation is an RLC load bank manufacturer in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, building combined resistive, inductive and capacitive load banks that test a generator or UPS at its rated power factor rather than at unity alone. Each section is independently switched, so the operator can set any kW and kVAR combination from 0.8 lagging through unity to leading. Units are built and full-load tested at our own works and supplied to generator OEMs, testing agencies and commissioning contractors across India.

RLC Load Bank Manufacturer in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

Akshayam Controls & Automation designs and manufactures RLC load banks — resistive, inductive and capacitive elements combined in one unit — for testing generators, UPS systems and switchgear at realistic power factor. A purely resistive bank proves kW output and exercises the engine. It does not load the alternator field, and it tells you nothing about how the machine behaves when the site load is motor-heavy. An RLC unit adds lagging kVAR through iron-core reactors and leading kVAR through capacitor banks, so the set can be run at its full kVA rating and its true nameplate condition.

Each of the three sections is switched independently from the panel front, which means any kW and kVAR combination inside the unit rating can be set and held — typically 0.8 lagging for generator acceptance, unity for engine and cooling checks, and leading for UPS and inverter work where capacitive input filters and long cable runs push the power factor the other way. Over-temperature, airflow proving and capacitor discharge protection are built into every unit. Switchgear comes from Schneider Electric, L&T, Siemens, C&S Electric and ABB.

We are based in Coimbatore, and RLC enquiries reach us from a noticeably different map than our panel work — Kerala and Karnataka are as strong as Tamil Nadu, with Bengaluru the single busiest city. Units go to generator OEMs, third-party testing agencies, data centre commissioning teams and EPC contractors. Customers often pair the RLC unit with a Resistive Load Bank for straightforward kW trials, or order it alongside the DG Synchronization Panels it will be used to commission.

What is an RLC Load Bank?

An RLC load bank is a test load containing three element types in one enclosure: resistive banks that draw real power in kW, inductive reactors that draw lagging reactive power in kVAR, and capacitor banks that draw leading kVAR. Switching them in combination lets the operator present the source with a load of any chosen power factor. Because a generator is rated in kVA at a stated power factor — almost always 0.8 lagging — an RLC bank is the only way to load it to its actual nameplate figure and confirm the alternator, excitation system and AVR perform as specified.

Resistive Section (R)

Alloy elements draw real power at unity power factor, loading the engine, governor and cooling system in kW.

Inductive Section (L)

Iron-core reactors draw lagging kVAR, loading the alternator field and testing excitation and voltage regulation.

Capacitive Section (C)

Capacitor banks draw leading kVAR, reproducing UPS input filters, lightly loaded cables and inverter-fed systems.

Combined Power Factor Control

The three sections switch independently, so any point from 0.8 lagging through unity to leading can be set and held.

Key Features of Our RLC Load Banks

Benefits of RLC Load Bank Testing

  • Loads the generator to its true nameplate kVA, not just its kW
  • Tests the alternator excitation system and AVR under reactive load
  • Verifies voltage regulation when reactive load is applied and removed
  • Reproduces motor-heavy site conditions before the plant depends on the set
  • Satisfies OEM and consultant specifications that call for 0.8 PF testing
  • Validates UPS performance at rated power factor rather than unity
  • Leading power factor testing for inverter and capacitive-filter systems
  • One unit covers kW-only, lagging and leading tests
  • Documented kVA and power factor results for handover and approvals
  • Independent kW and kVAR control supports staged commissioning procedures

Note: Test results reflect performance at the time of test. Continued reliability depends on fuel quality, battery condition and routine maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions About RLC Load Banks

What is an RLC load bank?

An RLC load bank contains resistive, inductive and capacitive elements in one enclosure. The resistive section draws real power in kW, the inductive section draws lagging kVAR through iron-core reactors, and the capacitive section draws leading kVAR. Switching them in combination lets the operator load a generator or UPS at any chosen power factor instead of only at unity.

What is the difference between an RLC load bank and a resistive load bank?

A resistive load bank loads the source at power factor 1.0. It proves kW output and exercises the engine, governor and cooling system, which covers most routine generator testing. An RLC load bank adds reactive load, so the alternator field, excitation system and AVR are tested as well and the set can be run at its full kVA nameplate rating. If your specification calls for testing at 0.8 power factor, you need an RLC unit.

Why is generator testing done at 0.8 power factor?

Because that is how generators are rated. A set described as 500 kVA is 500 kVA at 0.8 lagging — 400 kW plus 300 kVAR. Loading it with 400 kW of pure resistance proves the engine but leaves the alternator running well under its design condition. Only reactive load brings the excitation system up to its rated point, which is where voltage regulation problems actually show up.

What is the capacitive section used for?

Leading power factor testing. UPS systems with capacitive input filters, inverter-fed and solar hybrid installations, and lightly loaded long cable runs all present a leading load, and generators behave differently under it — voltage can rise rather than sag. The capacitor section reproduces that condition so it can be checked before commissioning.

What capacity RLC load banks do you manufacture?

From 25 kVA units for UPS and small standby work up to 1000 kVA for large generator testing, with higher ratings achieved by paralleling units. The kW and kVAR split is set to the power factor range you need — a unit built for 0.8 lagging testing carries roughly three kVAR of reactive capacity for every four kW of resistive.

Do you manufacture inductive and capacitive load banks separately?

Yes. Where only reactive loading is needed — adding lagging kVAR to an existing resistive bank, for example — we build standalone inductive load banks and capacitive load banks. Many customers find the combined RLC unit better value once both are required, since one enclosure, one control panel and one cooling system serve all three sections.

Are you an RLC load bank manufacturer in Chennai and Bangalore?

We manufacture at our works in Peelamedu, Coimbatore, and supply RLC load banks regularly to Chennai and Bangalore — Bangalore is in fact our single busiest city for reactive load bank enquiries. We also supply Kochi, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Pune and the Delhi NCR region. Delivery, installation guidance and commissioning support are available in all of these locations.

How is the capacitor section made safe?

Each capacitor bank carries bleed discharge resistors that bring the stored charge down to a safe level once the section is switched out, and the enclosure is fitted with a door interlock so the bank cannot be opened while energised. Warning labels and a discharge time are marked at the access point.

How can I request an RLC load bank quotation?

Send the kVA rating of the generator or UPS to be tested, the power factor range you need to cover, the test voltage and frequency, your preferred step resolution, and whether the unit will be indoor, outdoor or portable. Email sales@akshayamcontrols.co.in or call +91 89403 32552 and our engineers will size the unit and quote.

Need an RLC Load Bank for Full kVA Testing?

Tell us the kVA rating and the power factor range you need to test at, and our engineers will work out the kW and kVAR split, share the drawing for approval, and build a unit that is run at full load before it leaves our works.
