When EB power fails, how fast does your DG take over, and who makes it happen? With an Elmeasure automatic transfer switch (ATS) panel, the answer is: automatically, within seconds, with nobody needing to touch the panel.
At our Coimbatore works, Akshayam Controls and Automation recently completed two EB–DG changeover panels side by side: one built around the Elmeasure ATS (automatic) and one with the Elmeasure MTS 200 (manual). In this blog we use real photos of both panels to explain how an automatic transfer switch works, its advantages over a manual transfer switch, and how to choose the right one for your site in Coimbatore and Tamil Nadu. You can also see our full range of AMF and ATS panels.

Inside Our Elmeasure Automatic Transfer Switch Panel

What is an Elmeasure Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)?
An automatic transfer switch is a motorised changeover switch with a controller that watches the EB supply continuously. When EB fails, it shifts your load to the DG set on its own; when EB returns, it shifts the load back. The Elmeasure ATS is a 4-pole, motor-operated transfer switch with I–0–II positions, so EB and DG can never be connected to the load together.
How an Elmeasure ATS panel works
- EB healthy: the ATS stays in position I and the load runs on EB. The “EB Load On” lamp glows.
- EB fails: the controller senses the failure (phase loss or abnormal voltage) and, after a set delay, sends the start command to the DG.
- DG ready: once DG voltage is stable, the ATS moves from I to 0 to II. The load is now on DG and the “DG Load On” lamp glows.
- EB returns: after a stabilisation delay, the ATS transfers the load back to EB.
- DG cool-down: the DG runs off-load for a short cool-down and then stops.
10 Advantages of an Elmeasure Automatic Transfer Switch over MTS
- Automatic changeover, no operator needed. Power is restored within seconds of the DG becoming ready, day or night, even on holidays and in unmanned sites.
- Automatic return to EB. When EB comes back, the ATS transfers the load back by itself, so the DG does not keep running unnecessarily and you save diesel.
- Reduced downtime and production loss. With an MTS, the outage lasts until someone reaches the panel. With an ATS, machines, lifts, pumps and servers are back on almost immediately.
- No human error. No wrong-position switching, no operating on load in a hurry, and no one fumbling at a live panel in the dark.
- Operator safety. Changeover happens inside the closed panel. Staff never need to open the door or operate a handle during a power failure.
- Mechanical and electrical interlock. The I–0–II design plus control logic prevents EB and DG from ever being paralleled, protecting the DG alternator and TNEB line staff from back-feed.
- 4-pole switching with switched neutral. EB and DG neutrals stay separate, so RCCB/ELCB protection works correctly and nuisance tripping is avoided.
- Supply monitoring. The ATS controller watches the EB supply, so it reacts to a phase failure, not only to a total blackout, and protects motors from single phasing.
- Manual override still available. The Elmeasure ATS can be operated manually during maintenance or if the controller is out of service, so you never lose the MTS function.
- Better visibility. Door-mounted EB Load On / DG Load On lamps, phase indication and a multifunction meter show the source, voltage, current and energy at a glance.
Elmeasure ATS vs MTS: Side-by-Side Comparison
Both panels below were built at our works. The difference is not only the switch, but how the site behaves when power fails.
| Feature | Elmeasure ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) | Elmeasure MTS (Manual Transfer Switch) |
| Changeover on EB failure | Automatic, within seconds of DG ready | Manual, only when an operator reaches the panel |
| Return to EB | Automatic, after EB stabilizes | Manual |
| DG start / stop | Auto start command and cool-down stop | Manual |
| Operator needed | No | Yes, every time |
| Interlock | Mechanical + electrical | Mechanical (I–0–II) |
| Supply monitoring | Yes, by ATS controller RS 485 | No |
| Manual operation | Available as override | Only manual mode |
| Control supply | Required | Required |
| Typical panel | Floor-standing or wall panel with lamps, meter, control wiring | Compact wall-mounted panel |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Factories, hospitals, apartments, IT, lifts, fire and water pumps, unmanned sites | Small shops, homes, workshops, non-critical loads |
The MTS panel we compared against

The MTS is safe and economical, but someone must be present to operate it. The ATS removes that dependency completely. For unmanned sites and critical loads, see our Elmeasure ATS and AMF panel range.
A reliable automatic transfer switch needs an equally well-built panel. Here is what goes into an Akshayam Elmeasure ATS panel:
- Floor-standing, powder-coated sheet steel enclosure with double doors, neoprene gaskets and a separate control door.
- Elmeasure 4-pole motorised ATS with its controller mounted directly on the switch.
- Busbars with colour-coded heat-shrink sleeving (Red, Yellow, Blue and Black for neutral) for EB incoming, DG incoming and load outgoing.
- Metering CTs on the outgoing busbars feeding the door-mounted multifunction meter.
- Outgoing MCCB for load-side protection.
- Control wiring in PVC ducts, with control MCBs, relays and terminals on DIN rail, ferruled and labelled for easy troubleshooting.
- Door indications: R, Y, B phase lamps, EB Load On and DG Load On lamps.
- Earth bar and bottom gland plates for clean cable entry and proper earthing.
Every ATS panel is wired, inspected and function-tested at our Coimbatore works, including simulated EB failure and return, before dispatch.
Frequently Asked Questions on Elmeasure ATS
What is the difference between an ATS and an AMF panel?
An ATS panel transfers the load between EB and DG automatically. An AMF (Auto Mains Failure) panel adds full DG control and protection, such as auto start/stop, engine fault alarms and battery charging. Many sites use an ATS together with the DG’s own AMF controller.
How fast does an Elmeasure ATS change over?
The switch itself operates in a few seconds. The total time also depends on the delays set in the controller and how quickly the DG reaches stable voltage.
Can an Elmeasure ATS be operated manually?
Yes. A manual override is available for maintenance or emergencies.
Why choose a 4-pole ATS for EB–DG changeover?
Switching the neutral keeps EB and DG neutrals separate, prevents nuisance tripping of earth-leakage devices and avoids circulating neutral currents.
Can my existing MTS panel be upgraded to an ATS?
Yes. We can replace the MTS with an Elmeasure ATS and add the control wiring, indications and DG start interface. Enclosure size is checked first.
Do you supply Elmeasure ATS panels outside Coimbatore?
Yes. We supply ATS, MTS and AMF panels across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and other states.
